A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Subscriber First Name,

As the new year approaches and I reflect back, I am so grateful for the generosity of this community and its support of the Carmel High School Foundation’s (CHSF) work on behalf of the scholars in our District. It goes without saying that the students are doing incredible things. Central to The Foundation’s mission is helping our students maximize their opportunities to learn, explore and achieve. As you will see in this newsletter, the Foundation is pivotal in giving students the chance to explore their futures through key programs:

• New Tyler Fellowship Program (2 inaugural fellows in 2022).

• The Ron Stoney Pathways Program (8 recipients in 2022).

• A broad range of post-secondary scholarships to graduating seniors (26 scholarships in 2022).

In total across the 3 programs, CHSF dispersed over $80,000 to deserving CHS students in 2022.

TYLER FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Established in 2022 with the vision and funding of local philanthropist William H. Tyler, the Tyler Fellowship Program exists to fund opportunities for CHS students to do something exceptional to guide their future careers. These fellowships provide the resources, support and professional contacts of industry leaders needed to pursue passions to a depth that students would not otherwise be able to achieve solely through the experiences and curriculum afforded by Carmel Unified School District (CUSD).

CHSF funded two inaugural Tyler Fellows in the summer of 2022.

1. Rising senior, Riley Palshaw, explored journalism at The School of the New York Times.

2. Rising junior, Isabel Norman, began her study of Cultural Anthropology with a course at MPC during the spring semester and an immersive program at the Santa Reparata International School in Florence, Italy for an intensive study in Renaissance Culture and Society.

The application process has already started for 2023 and promises to be very competitive. The Foundation is excited to be able to fund life-changing opportunities, all of which are made possible by the generous support of William H. and Susanne S. Tyler.

2022 RON STONEY EDUCATIONAL PATHWAYS PROGRAM

RSEPP provides funding for extracurricular experiences that are instrumental in helping students discover passions, guide career choices, and shape their lives.

In 2022, eight students received grants totaling almost $20,000.

2022 RSEPP HIGHLIGHTS

EMMA HEISER, 12TH GRADE, SERVICE HAWAII: ISLAND HABITAT RESTORATION | She worked alongside local organizations and met with Native Hawaiians as she learned about caring for the land from their unique perspective. Emma’s hands-on experiences on the farm led her to understand that her true passion is in the agricultural sciences: working with plants, feeling the soil, creating a sustainable future….Emma is most thankful for the opportunity RSEPP provided and, it’s fair to say, everyone in her orbit is benefiting as well.

BRADY KASPER, 12TH GRADE, FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGINEERING - SUMMER SPRINGBOARD
AT U.C. BERKELEY | This course, designed to give students a taste of multiple types of engineering, appeared to be the perfect way to affirm his calling prior to applying to colleges and universities. Although Brady performed at the top of the class in all three areas [civil, mechanical, and biomedical], it was the biomedical project where he designed a prosthetic hand that connected his mind for building things with his heart for people. As he put it, he fell in love with it. Brady credits the grant from RSEPP for giving him access to this amazing experience that helped him find the perfect balance.

NOAH MAYER, 12TH GRADE, U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY SUMMER SEMINAR | Noah stayed in iconic Bancroft Hall, did marching drills with his squad, took classes in physics and seamanship, staffed a Yard Patrol boat on Chesapeake Bay, and did more sit-ups, pushups and running than he thought possible. Through it all, Noah learned that he likes the mutual dependence of working with people from other places and walks of life and enjoys being challenged to be his best both intellectually and physically. Noah now knows that he wants to attend the Academy and appreciates RSEPP for the grant that kick-started his application.

EMMA BROWN, 12TH GRADE, MEDILL-NORTHWESTERN JOURNALISM INSTITUTE (MNJI) | Emma sharpened her skills in investigative journalism and, most importantly, confirmed that life as a journalist is her chosen path. She came away invigorated by the knowledge that she has so much to learn and so much potential to grow…we can look forward to gaining insight from Emma’s journalistic talents through her articles in the Sandpiper, the CHS monthly newspaper.

AROUND CHS

CHS MOCK TRIAL PLACES 7TH IN NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

With support from the CHSF and other community orgs, the Mock Trial team recently traveled to Chicago to participate in the invitational Empire World Championship Tournament. The team finished in 7th place and also garnered two individual awards for best attorney and best witness.

Team leader Bill Schrier, CHS teacher and attorney coach, has a long track record of success. They are currently 11 time County Champions and have medaled at the California State Finals 7 years in a row. Notably, in the 2016-17 season, the team won the State Championship and Empire World Championship.

DONOR CORNER

The generosity of our donors is the lifeblood of the programs that enable us to support students on their path to success. Any contribution, large or small, is greatly appreciated and helps us build lasting programs.

In 2022, CHSF received charitable donations in several different ways. While year-end giving sustains many non-profit organizations, including CHSF, this year we wish to highlight the other uniquely generous gifts we received:

• Since 2010, Carmel Unified School District Board members have contributed their statutory compensation for the specific purpose of assisting CHSF with its goal of ensuring that 100% of donations from the public are utilized for student scholarships.

• Bill and Susanne Tyler funded The Tyler Fellowship Program which provides ongoing support to CHS students to do something exceptional. Students (and their faculty mentor) are provided the resources, support and professional contacts needed to pursue interests and passions outside of their CUSD experiences.

• Jo-Evelyn Smart (nee Albee), Class of ’51, established a scholarship through an estate gift by naming CHSF as beneficiary of her annuity policy. Her gift is funding a scholarship for graduating seniors to pursue their love of art. A gift of this type can be restricted or unrestricted.

• After the passing of a loved one, a request for donations to CHSF in lieu of flowers is a wonderful way to honor the decedent. Recently, long-time (31 years) school secretary Jean Harnish was honored in this way and created a lasting gift to the students that she loved so much.
  
  Please know that your tax deductible gift will allow CHSF to fulfill its mission to support deserving CHS students as they pursue their dreams.
